2-22-2011... snow again and snow geese.

There are all sorts of obstacles encountered on a dog walk during the day light or the dark of night.  For that reason, I generally watch the ground and where I am going to avoid falls.   When the dogs stop to dig or snuffle about, i always look up to the top of the trees.  Taking advantage of the winter scene, bare branches and no canopy of leaves still make a  beautiful sight.   Drinking in every scene of every season.  Being thankful for them all.... How can you not?

This morning as i was gazing up into the blue sky and bare branches.. i saw a flock of snow geese flying in V formation.  Snow geese, not Canada geese.   I cannot recall ever looking up and seeing such a different sight and i plan to check my 30 years of bird watching notes to see if i have ever noted this sight before.  Does not matter, as  they were  Snow geese today. They were all white underneath with black wing tips.  They were smaller and fatter looking, their necks were not as long, all this even at the distance. Their white was brilliant in the sunlight.  The V formation was a different from the Canada geese V.   There were not as many individuals as the Canads geese usually have and they seemed to be  quieter than the Canada's.   It was a beautiful sight all the same.

Bird migration starts mid february regardless of the weather, and seeing birds moving into and out of the area is always a sure sign of spring.  Less birds at the well stocked feeders, till the snow the last 2 days and now everyone is back for an easy meal.

cold cold cold...
but another beautiful day in the country.
