i love soft pretzels. I have been a big fan since i was a child, growing up in south philly.
Just a penny for a large pretzel, way back when, or 3 small ones for a penny too.
over the 50+ years of enjoying soft pretzels the price has gone up. From that Penny to a nickle, a dime, a quarter.... fifty cents, a dollar. yes of course in some places they are more still. Over the years the pretzels have stayed the same. Warm cooked dough. more like a bagel. not dessert, like auntie Ann's which are good in their own right but they are not Philly pretzels.
Recently we had a Philly pretzel factory open (again) in the quakertown area. This is the 3rd such shop and from the looks of things.. this might be the charm! They don;t carry much more than pretzels, mustard, and a cooler of drinks but it would seem a variety of sizes unlike the shops that failed.
The first couple trips i went for my favorite large pretzel. eventually i decided to go with the smaller pretzels.. 3 for $1.
new years eve, i tried the rivits. a soft 3 inch stubby stick. Comes in a small box or a large box. The small box must have near 30 sticks for $3, 2 small boxes for $5. The larger box with more than double the amount of pretzels is $6, and 2 larger boxes come in at $10. a couple of dips included with each box. You can choose from cheese. (cheese???) yellow mustard, brown mustard, or hot mustard. the brown was ok... but my favorite is the yellow mustard. who ever decided to put mustard on pretzels?? a really Philly treat!
Here's to the Philly pretzel factory.
hope it lasts for a few years.
what a bargain and what a treat!
a blast from the past!
